High Ankle Sprains

High ankle sprains differ from the typical lower ankle sprains due to the ligaments that are affected.  High ankle sprains usually affect the ligaments that connect the tibia to the fibula.  The lower or more common ankle sprains usually affect the ligaments connecting the tibia and fibular to the foot bones.  The ligaments between the tibia and fibular are know as the syndesmosis.

Most high ankle sprains are caused by some twisting type injury. High ankle sprains are less common than lower ankle sprains, and can be associated with fractures of the tibia and fibula if the twisting energy is severe.
